In Serifos Island the rich iron deposits attracted mining activity from the mid-19th century. Mining activities began in 1869, when the first license for iron mining on the island was granted. It is the era of <<mining fever», which takes over Greece from 1861 when legislation for the concession and exploitation of mines is enacted. Serifos Island gradually evolves into one of the largest mining centers in modern Greece. By the early 1960s, however, the ore deposits had been depleted and the mines ceased to operate.
