History

The National Geological Museum is the first coordinated effort of the Greek state for the promotion of the Geological Cultural Heritage of Greece. 

Η Hellenic Survey of Geology and Mineral Exploration (H.S.G.M.E.) was established 2021 the Museum, in place of the former Museum of Minerals and Rocks, which, after its radical reconfiguration, operates in a specially designed space in the Central Facilities of the Survey, which also has overall custody and management of it.

Its aim is to promote the protection and promotion of the geological wealth of Greece and the role it played in the history and formation of the ancient world, the modern and contemporary history of Hellenism, promoting its historical and scientific value worldwide.

The Museum, through its collections, is addressed to both the general and specialised scientific public, with the presentation of important geological specimens of Greece (minerals, fossils, rocks, etc.), while at the same time it is a source of knowledge and research of the country's geological wealth.

In its halls, the long development of geological research, the promotion of geological wealth and geological cultural heritage is presented, while its collections from Greece are among the richest in the world, making it the "Treasury" of geology in Greece.
