Collection of Chalkidiki

One of the richest mining areas in Greece is located in NE Chalkidiki.

The mining activity starts from antiquity with the exploitation of the mineral wealth of the Βορειοανατολικής of NE Chalkidiki, which was suspended during the Roman era (around 167 BC). A new period of prosperity began in the 15th century during the period of Ottoman Empire. The production of silver ensured that the region of Mademochoria enjoyed a favorable regime of self-management, which lasted until their participation in the liberation war of 1821. Modern mining activity begins in 1893 with the Cassandra Mines and continues to this day in the rich gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper mines. Mining activity intensified at the beginning of the century and is still being exploited today. In this section, samples of sulphide, sulphate and carbonate minerals from the deposits of NE Chalkidiki, in particular Olympiada and Stratoni, are exhibited.

In this section samples of sulphides, thio salts and carbonate minerals from the deposits of Northeastern Chalkidiki and in particular Olympiada and Stratoni are presented.
